Sands of Forgiveness

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE.

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?” The other friend replied “When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.”

Weight of the Glass

Once upon a time a psychology professor walked around on a stage while teaching stress management principles to an auditorium filled with students.  As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the typical “glass half empty or glass half full” question.  Instead, with a smile on her face, the professor asked, “How heavy is this glass of water I’m holding?”

Students shouted out answers ranging from eight ounces to a couple pounds.

She replied, “From my perspective, the absolute weight of this glass doesn’t matter.  It all depends on how long I hold it.  If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light.  If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make my arm ache a little.  If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor.  In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me.”

As the class shook their heads in agreement, she continued, “Your stresses and worries in life are very much like this glass of water.  Think about them for a while and nothing happens.  Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little.  Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed – incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.”

The moral:  It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses and worries.  No matter what happens during the day, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down.  Don’t carry them through the night and into the next day with you.  If you still feel the weight of yesterday’s stress, it’s a strong sign that it’s time to put the glass down.

Different people have different perception. One man’s meat could be another man’s poison. A couple bought a donkey from the market. On the way home, a boy commented, “Very stupid. Why neither of them rides on the donkey? “Upon hearing that, the husband let the wife ride on the donkey. He walked besides them. Later, an old man saw it and commented, “The husband is the head of family. How can the wife ride on the donkey while the husband is on foot?” Hearing this, the wife quickly got down and let the husband ride on the donkey.

Further on the way home, they met an old Lady. She commented, “How can the man ride on the donkey but let the wife walk. He is no gentleman.”
The husband thus quickly asked the wife to join him on the donkey. Then, they met a young man. He commented, “Poor donkey, how can you hold up the weight of two persons. They are cruel to you.” Hearing that, the husband and wife immediately climbed down from the donkey and carried it on their shoulders.

It seems to be the only choice left. Later, on a narrow bridge, the donkey was frightened and struggled. They lost their balance and fell into the river. You can never have everyone praise you, nor will everyone condemn you. Never in the past, not at present, and never will be in the future.

Thus, do not be too bothered by others words if our conscience is clear..

Power of Consistency

Once upon a time in a kingdom named Aryapuram, there lived a Guru named Advait. Advait was a very learned person and has lot of experience in teaching, students from far lands came to him for education.

He trained the princes of different lands everything that they needed to learn to become a king one day. The students were called shishya when they were in his ashram.

Once,in his ashram, there were 4 shishya’s named Dhanush, Chitraksh, Itish and Saket. All four were very bright and good in conduct too howver there was one problem. They would start any new work with full enthusiasm but loose interest very soon and give up on and never finish that work. Guru Advait observed this and thought of teaching them a lesson.

One day Guru Advait called all four shishya’s and said to them “My dear, students as you know summer is soon approaching and we have only one well for all our needs in the ashram, I think if we can dig up another well it will be useful for us. So I want you four to start digging up a well on the north side of the ashram, I will go get some help from nearby village” saying this Guru Advait went into the village.

Hearing Guru Advait, the Chitraksh at once jumped on to work of digging the well, Dhanush used a crowbar and dug the soil, Saket pulled out soil from the pit and Itish started throwing the soil in a nearby open land. By the time they have dug up few feet’s Guru Advait came there and said: “my dear stop digging here, please move to that corner and start digging”.Shishya’s were little surprised, yet thought maybe there is no water in this part of ashram so Guru Advait is asking to dig in another place. They moved to other corner and started digging. After a while Guru Advait once again stopped them and asked them to move to another part of the ashram and start digging, this repeated a couple of times. Dhanush was comparitively impatient then the rest. He got angry with Guru Advait and said: “If we keep digging pits incomplete when and how would we complete digging the well”?

Guru Advait said, “of course you’ll finish digging the well” in the same way you are doing your other subjects. You start a subject and without finishing it you jump to another subject when you can finish your subjects, why would the well will not get finished?

All four by now understood that their guru Guru Advait has asked them to dig a well to teach them a lesson. They bowed down to Guru Advait and promised to never leave a work incomplete and go ahead to start another work.

A Story from Panchatantra…

“Dad, please just 1 year. I’m asking for just one year. I promise this time of one year will not go waste” pleaded Vrusha to her father.

She wanted to prepare for a year to give medical entrance. She had given her boards and wanted to drop a year to prepare. Her parents were not convinced about Vrusha dropping a year for preparation of medical. Finally she convinced them to agree to her decision by promising that she would do whatever her parents would say if she wasn’t successful in her motive.

She was sent to one of the finest coaching institute for medical in India. There in her class she was the person who got the lowest marks in the boards. The people with the highest percentage would never talk to Vrusha. Even the teachers got irritated from Vrusha as she would ask too many questions and still was the lowest scorer. Vrusha never protested to this discrimination towards her.

There were tests conducted every week. Once after a similar test when the result came Vrusha was again with the lowest rank. The next day in the class it was asked that if someone had some doubt in the paper.

As soon as Vrusha stood up the teacher said,  “See class whom we have. Miss Vrusha once again.  Yes miss Vrusha I think the whole paper must be a doubt to you isn’t it? You shouldn’t waste your parents money and leave preparing for medical because you’re never going to get a chance in any college.”

Vrusha didn’t say anything. One friend of Vrusha’s said once the teacher went out of the class, “Don’t pay attention to this.  Don’t be sad.”

“Who said I’m sad? Why should I even be? He knows me from just a week and I know myself since childhood. I believe in myself and by no means can someone deter me from it.”

Days passed and many tests took place. Vrusha upgraded from lower ranks to the middle ones. Still she was behind many other people.  In the meantime no one noticed that Vrusha’s performance improved in each test though she got low ranks. Her parents would also criticize her for not getting good rank but she never payed attention to all that she believed that she would do what she promised.

The day for which Vrusha spent a whole year of her life finally arrived. Vrusha’s big day, the day of the entrance had arrived. Vrusha entered the hall with no tension in her head.  She got the paper and saw that she knew 98% of the questions. She answered all the questions of which she knew the answer. On being asked about how her paper went, she replied that it was fine.

Finally the day of the results came. Vrusha waited for the websites to show the result. She had an All India Rank 3. Her institute called to congratulate her. She politely spoke to everyone. She was called for an interview. The journalist asked, “What is the reason behind your success? What advice would you like to give to the other students?”

“There are three reasons behind my success. One is my parents who let me follow my dream. The second is my coaching institute without which I could not even answer a single question. The last but the foremost reason is the ‘belief’ which I have in myself. The ‘belief’ that whatever the world may say I’m not a loser and like anyone else I have potential to make my dream come true. This is what is my advice for other students. No matter what anyone says to you always have the ‘belief’ that no matter what you are as potent as anyone to follow your dreams and make them come true. Have the ‘belief’.”

The Million Dollar Check

One businessman was in debt and couldn’t figure out a way out of it. Creditors were pressing him. Suppliers were demanding for a payment. He was sitting on a bench in the park with his head down, thinking what could save the company from bankruptcy. Suddenly, an old man appeared in front of him.
– I see that something is bothering you, – he said.
After listening to the businessman, the old man said:
– I think I can help you.
He asked the businessman, what his name was, wrote him a check and said:
– Take this money. We will meet here exactly in one year, and you will be able to return it to me at that time.
After that, he turned around and disappeared just as suddenly as he appeared.
The businessman saw a check in his hands for an amount of 500 thousand dollars, signed by John Rockefeller, one of the richest people in the world at that time!
‘I could end all of my problems in no time!’ – He thought. But instead, the businessman decided to put the check into his safe. Only one thought about its existence gave him strength to find a solution to save his business.
With the return of his optimism, he concluded profitable deals. During a couple of months he got out of debt and started to earn money again.
Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the same check. At the agreed time the old man appeared again. And at the moment, when the businessman wanted to return the check and to share his story of success, a nurse ran up and grabbed the old man.
– I’m so glad, I caught him! – She exclaimed. – I hope he wasn’t bothering you. He always runs away from the house and tells he is John Rockefeller.
The businessman was bemused. During the whole year he was spinning and building a business, buying and selling, convinced that he had half a million dollars. And suddenly he understood that it’s not the money, real or imaginary, that turned his life up. It was his new confidence and belief that gave him strength to achieve everything that he had now.

Being Yourself

One day a king came to the garden and saw withering and dying trees, bushes and flowers. An oak said that he dies because it can’t be as high as a pine. Applying to a pine tree, the king found her falling down because it can’t give grapes like a grapevine. And grapevine was dying because it couldn’t blossom like a rose. Soon he found a single plant, pleasing heart, bloomy and fresh. The king asked:
-All the trees and flowers here are withering, and you are flourishing, why?
– I think it comes naturally. I believe that when you planted me, you wanted to get a joy. If you would like to grow an oak, grapes or rose, you would plant them. So I think that I can’t be anything else than what I am. And I try to develop my best qualities.
Look at yourself. You can be only yourself. It is impossible for you to become someone else. You can joy and blossom or you can wither if you do not accept yourself.
